Owner Surrender

Pet Surrenders/ Rehoming

At Carteret County Humane Society, we strive to support our community with a wide range of animal care services. We work closely with Animal Control to take in stray animals within the county, in addition to accepting public stray drop-offs. Because stray intakes are our top priority, they receive precedence in our admissions process. However, when space allows, we are able to extend our services to accept owner surrenders for Carteret County residents only.

Due to the high demand for owner surrenders, we operate on a waitlist system. We understand that choosing to surrender a pet is often a difficult and emotional decision. Please know that we work to schedule surrenders as promptly as possible to help ensure a smooth and timely transition for both pets and their families.

We strive to maintain a low euthanasia rate and are committed to not euthanizing for space. This is why we utilize a waitlist system, it allows us to manage our capacity responsibly and ensures that every animal brought into our facility has the opportunity to receive proper care and make it to adoption status. Our goal is to give each pet the best possible chance at finding a new, loving home.
We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work to serve the animals and residents of Carteret County.

What are some alternative solutions than surrendering to a shelter?

We understand nobody wants to turn their pets over to a shelter, and there are ways to skip that heartache for everyone involved. Utilizing websites and social media will give you complete control on where your pet will spend the next chapter of their life. Anyone searching to adopt will be able to reach you directly if interested.
